What To Expect at MWUX14

Hey there! We can’t wait to see you in a few days for Midwest UX 2014! We’re in full-on preparation mode to get ready for your arrival, and we want to help you be prepared, too. Here are few things to know before you get here:

Weather

Indianapolis has brought out Fall — we’ve got some beautiful colors on display — and that also means the air is crisp and sometimes windy and rainy. The forecast right now calls for temperatures in the 60s, but it’s always a good idea to wear layers and bring an umbrella or other similar device for fending off rain.

Venues and Hotel Distances

Midwest UX is hosted at two venues (the Indiana History Center and the Herron School of Art and Design) about a 7-minute walk apart. The conference hotel (Indianapolis Downtown Marriott) is at most a 12-minute walk from the venues. The keynote and movie venues (The Indiana State Museum and IMAX theater) are a 6- or 7-minute walk from Herron or IHC.

Airport Arrivals

If you’re flying to the Indianapolis International Airport, you can rent a car, catch a taxi to the conference hotel for about $32, catch the bus (and get off at Washington and West Streets to walk to the hotel) for about $4, or book a shuttle to downtown for about $10.

Lyft

We’ve secured a sponsorship deal with Lyft to give you a free ride if you need one. Use the promo code mwux14 for $25 off your first ride. Note, this is only for new Lyft accounts. You’ll need to make a new account with Lyft in order use this deal.

Parking

If you are starting your Friday or Saturday at the Indiana History Center, parking is available in the History Center’s parking lot or at on-street meters located east of West Street on New York Street and Ohio Street. Keep in mind, you’ll need to move your car from the History Center lot at the end of conference sessions on both days. If you are starting at Herron School of Art and Design, parking is available for $12/day in the garage on the first floor just west of Herron. Note that the surface lot next to Herron is for students only.

Both Friday and Saturday nights feature events at the Indiana State Museum. Parking is available in the museum’s underground garage for $3 a day.

Kickoff Party on Thursday

Please join us for drinks, snacks, and duckpin bowling on Thursday from 6-9pm at Action & Atomic Duckpin Bowling in Fountain Square. We recommend using Uber, Lyft, or a cab as transportation. It’s about 2 miles from the conference hotel. There should be street or metered parking near the venue. There is another event finishing up at 6pm in Fountain Square that might make parking tricky (but not impossible) in the very beginning, consider yourself warned.

Registration / Check-in

Check-in starts at 8am on Friday morning at either venue. We recommend checking in at the venue where you plan to see the first talk of the day. If you want to get a headstart, check-in will also be available at Thursday night’s kickoff party. If you’re attending a workshop earlier on Thursday, you’ll be able to check-in before your workshop.

Meals and Snacks

We’ll have coffee and pastries available on Friday and Saturday mornings, as well as snacks throughout the day. You’ll find those in our Break Spaces in either venue. Lunch is also included and provided for you by some of our favorite local food trucks on Friday and Saturday.

GSW Happy Hour on Friday

Come on out to the conference hotel's restaurant, Champions Lounge, for a conference Happy Hour from 5:30-7pm on Friday. GSW will hook you up with drinks and appetizers while you mingle with other conference attendees.

Maker Screening on Friday

Join us for a special screening of the Maker documentary at the IMAX theater inside the Indiana State Museum. We’ve got complimentary popcorn and soda, boozin’ costs extra. Doors open at 7pm.

Booksignings and Giveaways

We’ll have a number of books and other goodies to giveaway throughout the conference, as well as some great giveaways after Mark Rolston’s keynote on Saturday. Friday’s lunch will feature booksignings with Peter Morville, Steven Hoober, and Skip Allums at the Indiana History Center in the Break Space.

After Party on Saturday

After Saturday’s keynote, join us for drinks and snacks as we say farewell to new and old friends and put another Midwest UX in the books! (Oh and we’ll announce the city for Midwest UX 2015!)
